This article was written for inclusion in the Special Issue of CGFR focusing on Cytokine Research in Belgium. Unfortunately, because of a tight publication schedule, we were unable to include this article in CGFR volume 22, issue 5–6. Nevertheless, this contribution in CGFR volume 23, issue 1 is an essential part of the CGFR issue on Belgium cytokine research.
